Food Porn Friday | The Malnati Chicago Classic | Lou Malnati’s

On a recent road trip to Arizona, my friends and I made a quick pit stop in Chicago. First thing on our to do list? Deep Dish! We decided to hit up Lou Malnati’s because it was the most convenient at the time. I know it’s touristy, and I’ve heard other places are better, but I don’t even care because it turned out to be heaven. As you can blatantly see as evidenced below.

No person can deny that famous buttered crust, tangy tomato sauce on top, with cheese oozing out the middle. We went with the Malnati Chicago Classic topped with Lou’s house specialty — an exclusive blend of lean sausage. I was literally stuffed after one bite, but not finishing that slice would be shameful. So I did.

I Don’t Think You’re Ready for this (Beef) Welly | Mooo…

If you want to eat beef like a bawse there are more than a handful of places to curb a good steak craving in this city, but there are certainly ones that outshine others. Although I tend to favor quirky eateries with menu items that would make a picky eater blush, I’ve made the rounds through my fair share of pricey steak houses and I recently found one that’s pretty much fit for a king. Or a 25 year old that doesnt mind giving up cable for a month so they can afford to spend some cash-money like one. Hey, we all have priorities, right?

Mooo, located inside the luxurious XV Beacon Hotel is sleek and sophisticated yet somehow feels relaxed. Servers whisk through the dining room like silent ninjas while guests kick back in the kind of comfortable seating you’d find in only the most lavish of Beacon Hill living rooms. You can go private and cozy at one of the corner tables, or sit a little closer to the lively bar area. We went cozy, sitting in what can only be described as THE throne of all chairs, which was perfect seeing as we balled so hard I was practically passing out from a severe food coma after licking the dessert plate, but I’ll get to that.

Where my obsession with Mooo resides is in the menu. They do a great job of straddling the line between classic and modern steak house offerings, and the attention to detail is insane. Let’s take our first app for instance.

Caramelized Sea Scallops pan seared and served over parsnip puree, melted leeks, and exotic mushrooms. In one word — unbelievable — and I hope you don’t get sick of hearing that, because if I make it to the end of this post without using it another two or three times I’ll be shocked. Bouncy scallops with a candied exterior, the puree was heavenly. The first foodgasm of the evening, and definitely not the last.

Next up were the American Wagyu Dumplings made with house-ground kobe beef wrapped inside a flour dumpling. Steamed to perfection and served swimming in a black bean and sweet chili soy sauce topped with mint cilantro, this starter is pretty much a no-brainer.  It’s unreal, no wonder it’s the number one selling app on the menu. It’s definitely fit for a show down with The Woodward’s short rib tortelini, and it may skew my opinion of steamed dumplings forever, but one can simply not go through an entire lifetime without eating at least 3 dozen of these. Minimum.

Our sides started to arrive before the main attraction, and I’m actually embarassed to admit how giddy we got. The Mooo Lobster Mac & Cheese (above) and the Exotic Mushrooms (below) were the ideal compliment to our main course.  You can really never go wrong with Mac n’ Cheese, espcially when it’s got extras inside and buttered bread creambs on top and the mix of Shitake, Mitake and King Oysters mushrooms added a nice lightness to our gorge-fest.

But then…. and here’s where Beyonce lent her hand to the title, because I really don’t think you are ready for this beef welly….

I don’t know if anyone is. 8 oz filet mignon topped with a layer of spinach, topped with a layer of fois gras surrounded by a flaky puff pastry. Presented at the perfect medium-rare temp, my jaw literally hit the table when this came out. Which was perfect, since I immediately started shoving bites of it inside my mouth. I’m not sure if Beef Wellington ever went out of style, but if it did then Moo is bringing it back HARD. Un-be-lievable. There, I said it.

I dont know what I was more excited about, the beef wellington or the Bananas Foster, which was the final element to our outstanding feast. Where do I even begin?!  It’s a heafty serving of vanilla ice cream, caramelized bananas and banana rum sauce. I’m pretty sure I burst into tears of joy when this was delivered. At this point I was honestly so full I think my brain was shutting down, good thing it doesnt take that much thought to lift a spoon to your mouth. Note-to-self: I need more bananas foster in my life.

Overall, what really drew me to Mooo was the fact that it is a classy steak house, but doesnt shy away from trying out new things. It’s a modern steakhouse that’s actually modern. It’s bold, it’s daring, and everything tastes… unbelievable! Completely overwhelmed by the awesomeness that is Mooo, I’m already making plans to try out their 3-course prix fixe lunch menu which they offer daily for just $25. Ummm, can you say AMAZING?! I may be able to handle beef welly on the reg, but my bank account certainly can not.

Top Of The Food Chain Vol 2 | Haru

Haru is another one of those corporate-ish spots that never made its way onto my to-eat list until recently. Not entirely my fault if you think about it, it’s located on the Huntington Ave. stretch between Cheesecake Factory and CPK, which automatically raises a red flag. Plus there is absolutely no reason to be walking on the street level through that ridiculous wind tunnel, ever. Skybridge all day erry day.

Jacki and I met a friend for dinner at Haru with no idea what to expect and turned out to be delighted by the experience. It’s a little overpriced but the presentation, menu selections and quality of fish is on point.

Haru is the middle ground between fine dining spots like Uni, O Ya or Oishii and casual weekday lunch or dinner places like Symphony Sushi or Fin’s. It’s good for a birthday dinner with friends or maybe a date night. Not like serious anniversary date night, though — just a normal one, feel me?

haru appetizers

We started with the Tuna Tartare with miso vinaigrette and quail egg. The texture was way more soupy than other tuna tartares, but the tuna soaked up the miso vinaigrette for  a brilliantly acidic result. The steamed vegetable dumplings were standard but well done. We also tried the Beef Negimaki grilled sliced beef and scallion roll which made for savory juicy awesomeness.

haru sushi

My favorite part of Haru was the crazy rollz. The Dice-K Roll with gold leaf, mango, avocado, tempura flakes, and spicy red and white tuna was sushi perfection if you ask me. I love goooold! No but seriously, the gold leaf is a little over the top I think. The Gramercy Park Roll had crunchy spicy super white tuna and jalapeños wrapped with tuna, yellowtail and salmon and topped with lemon, cilantro, tobiko and yuzu miso sauce.

And our HUGE $6 cocktail. What? It was a special that night, I actually don’t remember what was in it. Moral of the story, cocktails on the specials list are cheaper than the ones on the regular menu.

haru sorbet

For dessert we did a sampling of sorbets – green tea and mango. Loved both, mango was better though.

Haru is worth the trip! (And honestly, I don’t think you’ll have a problem getting a rez on a Friday or Saturday)

Rainy Day Asian Fix | Moksa & King Fung Garden

Whenever it rains I want Asian food. Whenever it’s Monday I start thinking about lunch around 10am. Therefore I want some dumplings right meow. I’m actually putting myself in agony writing this post because I’m starving and already debating which Chinatown spot to hit up for lunch today. I wrote about these two Asian restaurants on Chow Down Beantown recently and wanted to share them on Just Add Cheese as well.

Moksa opened a few weeks ago in Central. They serve both traditional and non-traditional Asian small plates like noodles, dumplings, pork buns, etc. It’s the perfect spot to hit up before a night out (at Naga most likely) or a casual weekday dinner. Here’s what I got on my first visit…

We LOVED Moksa. I enjoyed every dish except the Roti, which I wish had more sauce or something to moisten it up. It’s a straight forward, fun and affordable experience.

Now for a more traditional Chinese place that has been around forever, King Fung Garden in Chinatown. It’s hard to believe you’re in a working restaurant when you walk through the doors of what looks like a 1970′s diner, but the traditional Chinese dishes they serve are worth every pang of sketchiness. And it’s BYOB, so like, duh.

Food Porn Friday | Bolognese’d and Confused | Parish Cafe II

Last Sunday I met up with my brother at Parish Cafe II. He wanted to carbo load before running the Boston marathon and I supported his carbo loading by carbo loading myself, on this…bolognese

As I’m sure you are all aware, Parish Cafe(1 and 2) make amazing sandwiches on the reg. As much as I adore said sandwiches, the other menu items kill it just as much if not more (yes I said it) than the sandwiches. There are many, but my trip last Sunday reminded me that Parish makes Bolognese LIKE A BOSS. Because of the ratios mostly: meat to tomatoes, sauce to pasta, cheese to dish as a whole — it’s just perfect.

Because of this problem I have, where I can’t go to a restaurant and not order bolognese if it’s on the menu, I’m pretty confident in saying that it’s better than many North End bologneses I’ve tried, and I’ve a tried a lot. For a non-Italian restaurant that’s pretty impressive.

HAPPY FRIDAY!!

p.s. The title of this post is completely unrelated to anything. Unless you celebrate 4/20, in which case, touché.

Post 390 | Bomb Food in the Back Bay? We Haz Found It!

Even though the Back Bay is the center of this city, it can be a very scary place at times. Whenever I find myself in that part of town, famished, looking for a place to eat I honestly cringe a bit. Don’t get me wrong, there’s definitely a few gems, but overall most places are overpriced tourist traps. Combine that with the chaos of crowds that flood the streets on the weekends looking for posh patios on a nice spring day – just forget it.

While expressing my overall dissatisfaction with the food offerings in the Back Bay recently, I was told to check out Post 390. It’s a little off the beaten path and was off our radar until a few weeks ago when Meesh and I gave it shot.

I always assumed Post 390 was a little too fine dining for what I’m usually going for, but it  strikes a balance between approachable AND upscale. Maybe it was all that rich mahogany in the entrance that was throwing me off? The downstairs is more of a bar scene with a casual atmosphere and a gastropub meets comfort food menu. Upstairs the offerings are a little more refined, that’s where the fine dining comes in. The best part is that both menus are available in either dining room, so we tried a few things from each menu and the food proved to be inspired and original.

I was straight up obsessed with the cocktail I selected, The Pear Drink made with house-infused pear vodka and fresh lemon juice topped off with a Prosecco float and a dried pear chip and Ms. Meesh was also pleased with her choice, the Agave L’Orange with Zapopan 100% Agave, orange-jalepeno gastrique, Agave nectar and smoked sea salt, garnished with a spicy orange wedge. Two very different cocktails for two very different palates.

 moving on to apps…

The Southern Fried Green Tomatoes served with Vermont Chevre, scorched bell pepper vinaigrette and a spiced olive tapenade were perfectly crunchy, simple and well-prepared. The sauce added an element of piquant, and, of course, the Chev.

Post makes a pretty good Scotch Egg – a quail egg wrapped in maple sausage and served with fig jam and mustard sauce. Love love love scotch eggs. However, I’m a total sucker for runny eggs and these guys were done the old fashioned way — hard boiled. The crispy outer shell was good, but nothing beats runny yolk. Nothing.

The Thai Braised Pork Belly came paired with a jumbo lump crab cake and was topped with spicy green beans and sesame-ginger aioli. This pairing was…random, but it somehow worked. The Pork belly was perfectly rendered and the grean beans added a fresh crunch on top. The crab cake was great on it’s own as well, but it did seem like two separate dishes in one.

For an entrée I went with the Pan Roasted Day Boat Cod served over Finnan Haddie Scalloped Potatoes and paired with a warm spinach salad and house pancetta. This may very well be one of the best entrees I’ve ever had in the greater Boston area. I was forewarned by staff that it was a must try and I was pleasantly surprised to find it was unbelievable. Crunchy on the outside, flaky on the inside, and the cheesy covered potatoes were out of these world. That fish + those potatoes + a little green = divine!

Obvioulsy I couldn’t resist the Chocolate Cake Bread Pudding, which came swimming in a pool of valrhona cocoa sauce and butterscotch. Topped with salted caramel chunk ice cream and a chocolate crostini, this thing was devoured upon arrival.

The Banana Cream Pie, served with bruleed bananas and foster sauce, was a surprise hit. The servers assured us it was amazing and they were right.

So glad someone gave us the heads up about this place, it’s officially been added to our Back Bay Emergency Go-To list!

Stay Classy Boston

Boston is a casual city. Jeans are always acceptable attire and it’s rare that restaurants actually require men to wear jackets. Most nice restaurants won’t even notice if you’re wearing leggings and an over sized t-shirt! Trust me I’ve done it. This system is usually perfect for me because I wear Tom’s shoes 90% of the time and always sleep in too late to do my hair, but sometimes I feel the need to get dressed up. It usually happens after a string of way too casual outfits and a weekend trip to NYC where I borderline freak out at the state of my wardrobe.

Getting dressed up and doing it up right was the inspiration behind our Keepin’ It Classy event with Google Places. A few weeks ago, Jacki, Adri and I, plus 7 winners of our contest hit up three of our favorite classy Boston spots for appetizers, dinner, dessert and drinks in between!

We started with drinks and small plates at Jackson Cannon’s newest Kenmore Square venture — The Hawthorne. If you haven’t been yet, I recommend trying it ASAP for pre or post dinner drinks. It’s a way sleeker and more modern (but also funky) version of one of those subterranean/no-sign/speakeasy type places that has the best bartender in Boston to thank for the cocktails.

The Paper Plane - bourbon, Aperol, Nonino Quintessentia, and lemon juice

Aviation - gin, maraschino liqueur, crème de violette, and lemon juice

hawthorne boston

Olives, Pretzel Rolls, Deviled Eggs with Crispy Prosciutto

Next stop — Theater District, to our favorite Parisian Bistro Pigalle. We came to Pigalle for one thing and one thing only — their famous Cassoulet (and obviously a glass of Rhone to accompany it).

pigalle boston cassoulet

Cassoulet - braised lamb shank, duck leg confit, house made garlic pork sausage
& great northern white beans

Then it was off the Kendall Square’s newest food geek haven, Catalystfor dessert. The private table behind the fireplace is a must for big parties. We’ve tried Catalyst’s brunch and loved it, so we were expecting great things, but what we weren’t expecting was a dessert tasting of every single item they offer.

Butterscotch and Passion Fruit Pudding, Warm Pound Cake Croutons

Selection of Cheeses – this obviously made my night, and managed to bring my level of food coma to a new high…until THIS arrived at our table…

catalyst desserts

Chocolate Fondant, Caramel Glaze, Hazelnut Streusel, Banana Coulis

Pear-Almond Financier, House Made Crème Fraiche Ice Cream, Candied Almonds

Meyer Lemon Pudding Cake, White Chocolate Ganache, Caramelized Pineapple Coulis

Daily Offering of Housemade Sorbet

espresso martini

Which was then followed by a much needed espresso martini.

So Boston, if you want to keep it classy like we (sometimes) do — I wholeheartedly recommend each one of these spots not just for the food and drinks but for the hospitable servers, hosts and chefs.

p.s. I tried out Hawthorne around 1 am a few weeks ago, and it’s just as good for late night drinks as it is for pre-dinner, plus they got crazy with the playlist and start bumping 90′s rap jams which made my night.

Thank you to Google Boston and Uber for being our chauffeur for the night!

Food Porn Friday | Onion Rings at Grass Fed | Jamaica Plain

When I found myself at Jamaica Plain’s newest burger bar Grass Fed the other night I was presented with the inevitable question “French Fries or Onion Rings?” After a few moments of deep contemplation, I decided to go with the latter. The server immediately exclaimed “Good choice!” as she furiously typed into the computer, and boy, was she SO not kidding. That, my friends, that you see before you is an onion ring. Yes, that’s right, hidden inside that funnel cake-looking orange-y dough-batter is a massive halo of onion. It’s divine. And I’m excited to say that the whole stack remained crunchy till the last bite was devoured. To Be fair, I spent more than an hour at Grass Fed surrounded by porn-worthy food items, but these guys really rocked my world.
